1,000 Greatest Drivers: Mark Donohue
Still Penske's greatest driver ever, no matter how many Indy 500s he has won with other drivers.
I wanted to wait until the NASCAR Cup Series race finished and I had completed my NASCAR season summary statistics before I wrote this. I was initially going to write about Nick Cassidy because he is the greatest driver born on this date (a case could also be made for Mike Conway, but I think Cassidy is better even though it’s close) and also because the Formula E season has ended so I can already evaluate his current season. However, when I did more research, I realized this was the anniversary of Mark Donohue’s death so I went for him instead because obviously, he’s much more legendary than either of them and I do prefer to focus on drivers whose careers have already finished as much as possible so I don’t have to continue to rewrite. I’ve just begun working on a calendar for who I will write about on each date for the next year, but it still needs a lot of work and I’m not ready to release that just yet.
